Definition and advisories

US Nationals ordinarily resident in American Samoa are ineligible for the standard Visitor Permit issued for foreign citizens travelling to Samoa. Instead they must apply for a 30 day single entry Visitor Permit. A multiple entry Visitor Permit is also available for those US Nationals who have cause for frequent travel between the two Samoas.

The 30 day permits are intended for individuals who wish to visit Samoa for purposes such as a fa'alavelave or to visit relatives. The multiple entry permit is intended for those who are frequent travellers to Samoa as a visitor.

The 30 day permits are for single entry only. The multiple entry permit allows individuals a 12 month period within which they can travel to Samoa for no more than 60 days in total. If the individual wishes to stay in Samoa for more than 60 days then they must apply for another permit.

US Nationals ordinarily resident in America Samoa who are transiting via Samoa do require a Transit permit if they make their onward journey within 24 hours.
