Conditions for researchers currently engaged in research or intending to carry out research in Samoa

The following conditions are applied to all researchers currently engaged in research or intending to carry out research in Samoa:

  1. Each researcher must apply and obtain permission to engage in research work in Samoa from the Secretary to Government before starting her/his work.
  2. The application must include:
    1. a properly prepared outline of the intended research;
    2. an official note of approval to carry out the research from appropriate authorities of the institution(s);
    3. an undertaking that the researcher will abide by requirements set by the Secretary to Government.
  3. The Secretary to Government will consider each application on its merits and permission or refusal of each application is at his discretion: he is not bound to give reasons for his decisions.
  4. The Secretary to Government may stipulate further requirements as conditions on which permission is granted.
  5. The Secretary to Government may at any time after granting permission withdraw that permission for abusive use of that permission.
  6. The researcher before departure from Samoa must discuss with the Secretary to Government relevant aspects of her/his research in this country and must tell the Secretary to Government about any material of whatever nature discovered in Samoa during her/his research and specific permission from the Secretary to Government is required before any such material is taken out of the country.
  7. The researcher shall present a copy of the final report of her/his research in Samoa to the Secretary to Government when it is completed.
